It's incredibly charming with it's Beaux Arts Style and almost impossible to replicate, even in a teeny model. The analysis below describes the ambulatory of the NYPL. The route of entry carves out a delicate path towards the Reading Room, as - had intended. Today, the library is an institution some may argue as obsolete, but I would argue it's urgency is in the community that it is brought upon The urgency to education, in tandem with the urgency to communicate is often enclosed by a thick envelope, reminding us that we "must be inside somewhere" This exploration of a library dances between the boundary of interiors and exterior. Can I be inside, but can I also be outside? It’s implications were widespread in the early 20th century, decorating the east and west coast of the united states--thus acting as the catalyst of a new form of Urban Planning. While cities like San Francisco and Washington D.C were carefully crafted and flourished as prime examples of the movement, Chicago was the pivotal city which redefined city planning, and encapsulated the city beautiful movement. Thousands of miles away, the land of the Philippines experienced the same intrigue. This was no accident. Manila and Bagiuo were some of the first international cities to be planned by an American. The plan was released in 1905, 4 years before the plan of Chicago, and 12 years after the World’s Fair in Chicago. This paper will trace the physical and theoretical relationships between both cities, proving that Burnham used both cities to test his ideal “city” from the World’s Fair. It will also uncover the imperialist nature of the Philippine Commission and Daniel Burnham, and the ramifications it had on Manila and fellow filipinos across the country. Contact me for the paper. https://kyracu.com/NYCarshare Sun, 16 May 2021 21:00:23 +0000 Kyra Cuevas' Collective - Rebirth https://kyracu.com/NYCarshare NYCarshare Carsharing in New York City ALTERNATE METHODS, PLANNING &amp; URBAN DESIGN 2019 To reduce automobile ownership, suppress future car ownership and increase accessibility, the Hunter College Planning Studio explored the expansion and improvement of carshare in New York City. Our semester long exploration created an ideal city-administered mobility program that is affordable, convenient, and sustainable to improve the quality of life of all New York City residents. Carshare improves street safety, enhances livability, promotes physical activity, expands travel choices, improves air quality, promotes equity of access and reduces carbon emissions. However, it is logistically and financially challenging with a limited user base, which is manhattan centric and caters to a specific demographic. Additionally, an accurate curb values has not been assigned, nor has the enforcement of reserved carshare parking spaces improved. Furthermore, we have discovered that one-way and two-way services cater to different populations. Finally, we found that the lack of public engagement and street design led to the stagnation of the program. Our studio split into four groups: Drivers &amp; Users, City Administration, Companies and Siting and Design. The Siting and Design group strategically located neighborhoods to promote equity, and designed streets to promote sustainability. https://kyracu.com/Rethinking-the-BQX reTHINKING THE BQX THE BROOKLYN QUEENS CONNECTOR ALTERNATE METHODS 2019 In the midst of a transit crisis, Mayor De Blasio has been desperate to provide a new means of transportation--a light rail system to bridge two boroughs together. Light rail systems are not new to New York City, and in fact were used in the early 1900’s until the establishment of the elevated trains--or what is now referred to as the subway transit system. With the surge of new developments along the waterfronts of Brooklyn and Queens, De Blasio saw this projects as an innovative way to realize a skewed transit system. However, it’s price tag of $2.5 billion has proven itself to be contentious. This paper will deconstruct the intricate workings of the Brooklyn Queens Connector--proving that the idea can be executed in a much more equitable and fiscally responsible way.
